When It Rains On Your Wedding Day – Wedding Photography Top Tips from Devon Photographer Liberty Pearl

We photograph weddings in Devon and Cornwall, but also in beautiful countries around the world including France, Spain, Ibiza, South Africa, Ireland and many more…

We frequently get asked how rain or bad weather will affect our couple’s wedding photography. Whether your wedding is in the UL or abroad there is one thing you cannot guarantee THE WEATHER!

As we’ve already seen this month, even though we’re at the start of spring, with temperatures of 25 degrees and more last week, the sunny weather has been sandwiched between downpour after downpour! There are never any guarantees as to what the weather will do. One minute it can be bright sunshine, the next pouring with rain.

It’s no longer guaranteed that you will have amazing sunshine if you book your wedding in May, nor is it unheard of for our couples to be getting married outside at the start of October.

Our advice is always the same – you can’t change it – so just make the most of it and smile!

Here are our top five tips that will help you plan ahead for your special day whatever the weather:

  1. When searching for a wedding venue, it’s good to look for one that is as beautiful inside as it is outside. That way you can have the best of both worlds if the weather plays ball. If not, you won’t be too disappointed either!

Elopement wedding venue The Green Cornwall

2. Try to work with your photographer to be flexible with your timings or when things need to happen. We will always try to get some images taken outside in between any showers. If this means getting the group photographs taken slightly later when it is dry, then so be it.

3. Please remember that your couple photographs can also look stunning if taken inside. Our photographers are all fully trained in using off camera flash, which means they are able to make a feature of the rain.

4. Come prepared

We will always have white umbrellas with us to ensure that you look as radiant as possible in all weather conditions. If you want to buy your own umbrellas, please ensure they’re either plain white or see-through as this will enhance how you look. There’s nothing worse than an ugly colour cast or a motif/logo featuring in all your pictures. Some of the most fun weddings we’ve been fortunate enough to capture have seen showers on the day. Work with your photographer to ensure you have those special memories that you can look back on for years to come.

5. Embrace the rain!

Please don’t be too precious about your dress getting a little wet. The most important thing to remember is that your wedding day is a celebration of the start of your marriage, and if the hem of your dress gets a little damp, it really isn’t the end of the world. The couples we have worked with that have made a feature of the rain have enjoyed their days far more, than those who have stressed about it.

6. Most of all, enjoy your wedding day no matter what the weather and happy planning!

If you would like to book a photographer who loves embracing the elements with you on your wedding day, whether it is rain, wind or sunshine then Liberty Pearl  is the photographer for you!!!! We love nature, we love adventure and we love being inspired by the elements!

The Top Tips You Need to Know When Planning Your Destination Wedding

I am a destination wedding photographer. I feel very blessed to have photographed weddings in Ibiza, Spain, France, Cape Town, Ireland and Scotland, and this year I am the wedding photographer or videographer for destination weddings in Belgium, Ibiza, Santorini, Tuscany Italy, and France.

Nothing can be more appealing than having a destination wedding surrounded by your closest friends and family, but there are many things to consider if your dream day is to go according to plan.

As experts in destination weddings across the world, we thought that you would find it invaluable to hear our top tips on what you should know when planning that all-important special day abroad.

Choose your location wisely

It sounds like an obvious thing to say, but thinking about what kind of wedding you both want in advance can save a lot of problems further down the line. Is the venue suitable for all of your guests, and what is the weather likely to be doing at that time of year? Is there a contingency in case it does rain, and how organised does the venue seem to be around organising visits, responding to any questions you have etc. Has the venue also hosted other destination weddings and is there at least one fluent English speaking member of staff on board?

Make sure you have been to the location at least once beforehand

This is a biggie in terms of knowing what to expect and how everything could look on your special day. It will also give you a feel for what your location/venue will look like at any given time of the year. The more you have seen, the easier it will be for you to make an informed decision.

Take a photographer who speaks the same language as you and you have met beforehand

Yes we were bound to say this, but it is so important. Your photographs are the only real record that you will have of your wedding day. If you were getting married in the UK, you would want to meet or at the very least want to speak to your photographer beforehand, so it should be no different if you’re getting married abroad. Having someone who also speaks the same language as you, means that there are no misunderstandings and you’re able to let them know what you’re after.

Be aware of any local marriage requirements

This can be where a lot of couples run into difficulties. The legal side of getting married in a different country can be complicated. Did you know for instance that if you’re planning a wedding in France, you have to arrive in the country at least 40 days before you get married?

Cape Town Wedding Photographer

Local time

Please bear in mind how things are different from country to country so don’t keep a constant eye on the clock. Many tropical islands for instance run on “island time” – with things happening when they happen. Avoid the temptation to micro-manage from afar and instead just schedule in regular check-ins with each of your suppliers.

Get Help!

We’d always recommend having a planner who can oversee the whole wedding for you. It’s also well worth choosing a venue that is used to hosting weddings for foreign brides and grooms. It will act as a reassurance on the day that someone else is worrying about where the flowers are or how the tables are being dressed.

Ollie and Becky’s Special Wedding at Deer Park Country House Hotel

It has to be said that Deer Park Country House Hotel in Devon is one of our favourite all time wedding venues.

Not only is it stunning, but when it rains, as it did for Becky

and Ollie’s special day, it’s still possible to capture some beautiful moments making the most of its country-chic interiors.

And what a wedding it was – it was literally incredible!

Love, joy and happiness flowed in abundance, despite the torrential downpour mid-afternoon – which we’re pleased to say finally let up later in the evening.

Thankfully both Becky and Ollie embraced the weather and smiled throughout – which meant that they now have a set of wonderful photographs to treasure.

And as a bonus, when the sun did eventually make an appearance we were able to make the most of the beautiful golden light and the 80 acres of stunning grounds, in time for sunset.

Needless to say Becky looked stunning in her Suzanne Neville dress, which was offset by the natural flowers from Emma at Brompton Buds. Each of the bridesmaids looked elegantly stylish in their Phase Eight dresses, whilst Ollie and the boys looked suave in their suits by Jonathan Hawkes.

We’re so glad that we were able to capture such a beautiful wedding at this truly special venue. And the sun shining at the end of the day provided the icing on the cake.

We hope you enjoy the photographs!

Alice and Luke’s Ibiza Destination Wedding – Can Gall Agroturismo

I love weddings, I mean, who doesn’t? And Alice and Luke’s Ibiza wedding was a particularly magical one. Destination weddings are becoming increasingly popular and – cost effectiveness aside – you can see why…

The intense scenery and bright sunshine made being part of this wedding a joy for everyone. After all, who wouldn’t want fabulous weather for their wedding day?!

The day was started with breakfast in the sunshine, hair, make-up (and all the rest of it)…

Don’t you just love their kimonos?!

With an entourage of bridesmaids in tow, Alice walked down the outdoor aisle to embark on her newest adventure with Luke…

Adore those bridesmaid dresses… And how super cute is Alice’s bouquet?!

And not forgetting their absolutely breathtaking couple images…

The perfectly magical Ibiza location for this entirely magical couple. Can Gall is a typical Ibizan country house (finca) which is more than 200 years old, situated in the north and has been totally restored whilst retaining its original charm. You will find our rooms authentically decadent, with the emphasis on comfort to the highest quality.

In the grounds of the finca, growing in the rich red earth are fruit trees, almond trees and some olive trees which are centuries old. The whole estate of 137,000 m2 is surrounded by mountains which makes this location the perfect place to benefit from the peace and quiet in the summer as well as in the winter.

Agroturismo Can Gall is the ideal spot to enjoy a well earned rest, and enjoy the beauty and charm of Ibiza from this oasis on the White Isle.

Hayne Devon Wedding Gardens & Wedding Venue Visit

Hayne Devon Wedding Venue Photographer Liberty Pearl Photography

We had the best time visiting this this absolutely beautiful wedding venue today! As you can tell from the photos I absolutely love flowers and I feel so happy when surrounded by nature.

Today Hayne Devon had it’s gardens open for the National Garden Scheme. Hayne has a magical Walled Garden brimming with mature trees, shrubs, roses and borders. Highlights include beautiful tree peonies, mature wisteria in both purple and white and rambling wild roses in combination with a more modern Piet Oudolf style perennial planting which surrounds the recently renovated grade II* farm buildings … magic, mystery and soul by the spadeful!

Hayne, devon is a young and creative wedding and events space. Set In The Rolling Hills Of Rural Mid Devon. The historic 17th century Threshing Barn looks out towards sacred groves of woodland and lies in the heart of 25 acres of glorious grounds and enchanting gardens. South facing, the site gets the first and last of the sun and has breath-taking views across an ancient valley which steps down to a bend in River Yeo.

Wedding videography in Devon and Cornwall

We have some very exciting news at Liberty Pearl HQ to share with you today….

We have are now offering wedding videography in Devon and Cornwall to our services and would love to share our most recent wedding highlights film with you.

After sharing the film less than a week ago, we have had 5 bookings for wedding videography! and have been asked by a number of our current wedding couples if they can have wedding photography and videography and the answer is YES!

Why have we started making wedding films?

Many of our past couples said they wished they had captured their wedding with videography and regretted not doing so. I had a wedding film and absoltely loved every second of it, it brought a tear to my eye watching the 3 minute movie, I think I must have watched it over 50 times before I went to bed that night. There were so many little moments, reactions, smiles, tears and expressions captured that we would have never seen if it weren’t for our video.

After hearing so many couples saying they regretted not having wedding videography, I thought I would try and capture some of the love, joy and happiness I am exposed to at weddings in a highlights film.

We are extremely happy with the results of our destination wedding highlights film captured in Ibiza in June 2017 … were our lovely bride and groom Alice and Luke!

Please watch their 3 minutes of happiness in the highlights film below

Why have a wedding video as well as photography?

If I had to decide between wedding videography and wedding photography, I simply wouldn’t be able to….. they are both so beautiful and so special in their own way….

However if you have videographer you can replay the most special moments in your life. You may not think you want to relive every minute, but after the day you have been meticulously planning for months flies by in what feels like seconds, you will be desperate for a way to remember it.

A wedding video means everyone can share the joy

It is important to remember that not all of our friends or family can attend an event due to health problems, conflicting schedules, or unexpected emergencies. Therefore a beautifully edited wedding film will be of great comfort to those friends and family who were not able to make the event itself as the entire day will be saved from start to finish forever, so that you can relive your perfect day over and over and share it with those most important to you.

How do we capture the films?

We use the same cameras to capture images and film, we still capture your day with a natural, unobtrusive, relaxed, reportage approach so there is no need to worry about any extra interference on the day. The only thing you might see is a tripod during the ceremony and speeches but we will try and blend it in as much as we can.

Which areas do we cover?

We offer wedding videography in Devon and Cornwall, and also in London, Brighton, Scotland…. in fact we cover the whole of the UK!
You can also book our services for destination wedding videography in Ibiza, France, Greece, Italy, New York, you name it we can go there, and did I mention we love to travel…..

Please contact us for our price list for wedding videography. You will receive up to £500 off  if you also book your wedding photography or elopement with us.

Remember: A wedding is a live event, not a single moment. Make sure you get it captured right – you’re only going to do it once.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Is the wedding industry a rip off?

Is the wedding industry a rip off Pland and presents wedding blog Devon wedding photographer

Such a fab article from Alison at the PLANS AND PRESENTS wedding blog, about the wedding industry. I know lots of people who have had to give up their beautiful creative businesses because they just don’t pay the bills!

People don’t realise how much all the ‘behind the scenes’ items cost especially for photography, people think I make XX per day after looking at my wedding photography fees, I have had comments such as “you make more in a day than I make in a month!” but really the profit is very very low or non existent after paying for all the licenses, insurances, equipment, stationery, fuel, staff, marketing, branding, office costs, storage, computers, online galleries, advertising, car, websites, tax, VAT, national insurance, the list could go on….

Liberty Pearl Photography Wedding Workshop

Since I started my business I work on average in the office 50 hours per week and if I have a wedding or photo shoots that week it could go up to 70 hours! So my hourly rate is pretty awful to be honest. I didn’t taken a proper holiday (which didn’t include a destination wedding) for 2 years and I had flu pretty much the entire time I was away because I was so run down, and I haven’t had the time to take one since!

So you may ask why I and other wedding suppliers have chosen this career?

I for one love making people happy! I love providing a bespoke, creative, personalised service that suits my clients needs, I love working hard to make their wedding day so special, I love meeting new people, and getting to know them and spend time with them planning their wedding day, I love visiting beautiful wedding venues all over the world and seeing how couples add their own personal touch with their wedding styling. I love sharing such a special day with couples and capturing their family heirlooms that will last a life time.

If wedding suppliers were working in the industry simply for the money I don’t think there would be an industry to be quite honest!!!

So before you criticise people in the wedding industries or other creative industries, please think about all the behind the scenes work that goes into the beautifully hand crafted products, the sacrifices they make to their social life and their families by working weekends and during the holiday seasons, and the amount of pure LOVE they have for the industry, their wedding couples, and making every wedding day so unique and so very special! xx
