How to choose your wedding venue from a photography point of view

Devon and Cornwall wedding venue

Let’s face it; your wedding will be amazing from start to finish wherever you decide to get married.

But if you’re like us and value your photography and how your images look, here are some top tips to help you think about which venue will work best for you as a couple.

Here at Liberty Pearl Photography & Film Collective, we love everything to do with the outdoors.

Being able to capture the natural beauty of the various seasons makes us really happy and so we have compiled these top five tips if you’re starting your search for your venue:

  1. Always begin your search by looking for outside space. How will the area look in different seasons? Think about any ideas that you have for themes and how this will complement what you already have available.Hotel Endleigh Devon wedding photographer
  2. Do you have exclusive use of the venue? We have to admit that we find it so much better when our couples do. It means you don’t get someone else wandering into the back of your photographs. Exceptions to this include lovely golf clubs where you can still find lots of space away from any other guests.
  3. Can you decorate the venue yourself injecting your style to reflect you as a couple? This isn’t essential but it’s definitely a great one to look out for as the more unique you can make your venue, the better. It also means your photographs will reflect this too.
  4. Visit your preferred venue at different times of the day and on different days of the week. This will help you to see it in different lights and will help you envisage how it could look for you and your guests.Magical elopement woodland nature wedding
  5. Have a look to see if there are any lovely archways or areas that you really like. That way you can discuss them with your photographer and light allowing on the day, they will be able to capture some of them for you.Italy Ibiza destination wedding photographer

We would always advise going with your initial feeling about a venue.

If it feels right, it will be the one for you.

If you’re thinking about venues but finding it hard to choose, please feel free to contact us for some suggestions, we are the recommended supplier for a number of weddings in the UK.

We photograph weddings across Devon and Cornwall and further afield in the UK and internationally, and it’s highly likely that we have experience of the venue that you have in mind.

Happy wedding planning!

Ollie and Becky’s Special Wedding at Deer Park Country House Hotel

It has to be said that Deer Park Country House Hotel in Devon is one of our favourite all time wedding venues.

Not only is it stunning, but when it rains, as it did for Becky

and Ollie’s special day, it’s still possible to capture some beautiful moments making the most of its country-chic interiors.

And what a wedding it was – it was literally incredible!

Love, joy and happiness flowed in abundance, despite the torrential downpour mid-afternoon – which we’re pleased to say finally let up later in the evening.

Thankfully both Becky and Ollie embraced the weather and smiled throughout – which meant that they now have a set of wonderful photographs to treasure.

And as a bonus, when the sun did eventually make an appearance we were able to make the most of the beautiful golden light and the 80 acres of stunning grounds, in time for sunset.

Needless to say Becky looked stunning in her Suzanne Neville dress, which was offset by the natural flowers from Emma at Brompton Buds. Each of the bridesmaids looked elegantly stylish in their Phase Eight dresses, whilst Ollie and the boys looked suave in their suits by Jonathan Hawkes.

We’re so glad that we were able to capture such a beautiful wedding at this truly special venue. And the sun shining at the end of the day provided the icing on the cake.

We hope you enjoy the photographs!

We had the best time visiting this this absolutely beautiful wedding venue today! As you can tell from the photos I absolutely love flowers and I feel so happy when surrounded by nature.

Today Hayne Devon had it’s gardens open for the National Garden Scheme. Hayne has a magical Walled Garden brimming with mature trees, shrubs, roses and borders. Highlights include beautiful tree peonies, mature wisteria in both purple and white and rambling wild roses in combination with a more modern Piet Oudolf style perennial planting which surrounds the recently renovated grade II* farm buildings … magic, mystery and soul by the spadeful!

Hayne, devon is a young and creative wedding and events space. Set In The Rolling Hills Of Rural Mid Devon. The historic 17th century Threshing Barn looks out towards sacred groves of woodland and lies in the heart of 25 acres of glorious grounds and enchanting gardens. 5 reasons to hire a professional wedding photographer over a friend

Did you know that the number one regret of couples after their wedding is not investing enough in capturing their day? Some couples wish they invested in a videographer as well as a photographer while others wish they spent more on getting the best photos on their wedding day. Unfortunately, these regrets come after the wedding – once it’s too late.

While taking up the services a talented friend may save you money, it’s likely to cost you precious memories. Even if they are good at what they do, they’ll probably miss out on capturing candid moments and may not be able to work the crowd – both of which are essential for good wedding photography.

Why invest in a professional?

  1. They understand the fundamentals of wedding photography

A wedding photographer comes with years of experience. They understand the technical side of taking good photos as well as the creative and emotional side. An amateur photographer, however, doesn’t always have the right experience or professionalism. Shooting landscapes and capturing stunning moments from their holidays doesn’t make them a good candidate for your wedding. A wedding photographer needs to understand how to work in different types of light and how to exploit angles and poses. They also need to know all those must-have shots you’ll want to have in your album.

  1. They own the proper kit

If you don’t know that much about photography, it’s difficult to tell whether a photographer’s set up is good or not. Often, we’ll think that someone with a DSLR is more than capable of taking excellent photographs. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. A professional photographer carries around thousands of pounds worth of kit. Their camera is likely to cost thousands more than any amateur. They’ll also have other accessories to help them catch those essential shots and deal with low light conditions. Most importantly, they know how to properly use their kit – which is a lot harder than you might think.

  1. They guarantee full coverage

Wedding photography is about more than good photos. A wedding photographer needs to know how to work a crowd, interact with guests and capture moments at exactly the right time. A friend may struggle to organise groups for photographs or miss sentimental moments as they’re off enjoying the celebrations themselves. As a friend, they deserve to be enjoying the party – which in turn will sacrifice the quality of and number of good photographs.

  1. You only get one chance

Your wedding day only happens once, so it’s well worth making the investment. You will never be able to capture the special moments of the day again. Once the wedding is over, all you really have left – in terms of memories – is your photographs. cape-town-south-africa-nooitgedacht-estate-summer-wedding-liberty-pearl-photography

  1. A professional puts time into post-production too

The post-production (editing) process is as important as the photography. It usually takes more time too. It allows a professional photographer to offer something very special and creates that unique look and style each professional is known for. By editing photos on your behalf, I’ll make sure you’re left with an album of photos you adore – rather than leaving you to choose from the best of a mediocre bunch.

Professional wedding photographers are often more affordable than you might think. I offer mid-week and seasonal discounts and I’m more than happy to discuss a wedding photography package to suit you.

5 reasons to consider an intimate elopement wedding

Dreaming of sunshine on your wedding day, along with an enviable landscape and intimate party with your nearest and dearest? With an intimate elopement wedding, your big day is all about you. There’s minimal fuss and little worry about all those extra details. Instead, you’re there to celebrate your marriage with your closest family and friends in a natural setting that’s both beautiful and inspiring.Intimate elopement weddings are becoming more and more popular. And as a photographer, it’s an honour to photograph a couple on their intimate wedding. The weddings I shoot locally and overseas typically feature sandy beaches, sunny backdrops and the beautiful blue tones of the sea. The atmosphere is pretty epic too. With less than 10 people gathered round to witness the ceremony, there’s a real feeling of intimacy and love. It’s a joy to catch on camera.

Of course, an elopement wedding isn’t for everyone – but if you’re looking for a romantic, budget-friendly day that’s just about the two of you, it’s worth considering.

There are some fabulous elopement weddings venues popping up around the UK, I can highly recommend Boho Cornwall, who specialise in ‘just the two of you’ elopements in beautiful West Cornwall. Boho help you to create an elegant, intensely personal experience and will host your wedding with warmth, sensitivity and joy. I can also highly recommend Ever After: A Dartmoor Wedding, in Devon who offer couples laid-back luxury wedding that’s stylish, exclusive and intimate – whatever the weather.

  1. All about you

It can be difficult planning a large wedding, there is just so much to organise! An intimate elopement, however is made for small wedding parties. You can say goodbye to all the fuss of the guest list, seating plans, and décor and just enjoy your celebration of love.

  1. You can wear whatever you like!

With an intimate elopement wedding, you’re free to express your personality. There’s no need to dress in white or opt for something overly formal. You can still have a beautiful wedding dress if you wish or look totally amazing in something more casual.

  1. You can elope anywhere

I’ve talked about sunny, beach destinations but that’s just one of the many options when it comes to eloping. There are so many beautiful spots both in the UK and abroad. Some of my favourites include Spain’s beautiful beaches, Italy’s beautiful cities and villages, New York’s bustling streets and Cornwall’s coastal spots. Other jaw-dropping destinations you might want to consider include Devon, Scotland, the Cotswolds, Greece, New Zealand and Morocco.

  1. Minimal fuss and stress

With fewer guests to manage and fewer details to worry about, there’s a lot less stress leading up to the day. As an elopement wedding is often cheaper, there will be less budgetary stress too. So, instead of spending time stressing you can make the most of the planning experience together and enjoy the romance.

  1. An epic after party

Imagine it: You’re in your dream destination with all your loved ones and you’ve just got married. Could life get any better? Best of all, you’ll be able to enjoy the party yourselves rather than spending lots of time apart greeting and entertaining large numbers of friends and family.

Remember; just because you’re eloping, doesn’t mean friends and family at home get left out of the experience. Book a great photographer and videographer to capture everything and the rest of your family and friends can see and watch your day after it’s happened.

We offer a range of elopement packages in the Uk and abroad. All our prices include travel and accommodation worldwide. Please visit our elopement webpage for our packages and prices and to check our availability.

Engagement photo shoot Royal William Yard Plymouth

It was a pleasure to spend the day with Gio and Gina in the Royal William Yard, Plymouth for a photo shoot after their recent engagement. The weather was cold and grey, but the views across the Plymouth sound were very beautiful.  The cute young couple are just so in love!

Why have an engagement shoot?
It’s a great opportunity for us to get to know each other so that there are no surprises on your big day. I can see you together as a couple in a ‘normal’ every day situation, and you can get to know my shooting style whilst practising and experimenting in front of the camera (and not your guests!).

As a result, I promise that your wedding day photographs will be even more amazing, because you will be entirely comfortable with what’s happening on your special day.

I am really looking forward to their wonderful wedding this autumn in Nooitgedacht Estate at the Cape winelands in Cape Town, South Africa.

Wedding love from happy customers

Beautiful authentic testimonials from lots of happy customers in Devon and Cornwall who  LOVED their wedding photography with Liberty Pearl Photography

It is so wonderful reading all this lovely feedback from happy customers who voted for me in the South West Wedding Awards 2016

“Amber at Liberty Pearl was a fantastic photographer. She took time to get to know us beforehand and really listened to what we wanted. She had some great ideas and we were thrilled with our wedding photos. She captured the vibe of our day perfectly and was very relaxed – therefore making us relaxed. She was also very un intrusive and blended into the wedding background – still taking gorgeous pictures. She was very prompt in getting the photos to us and sent us a beautiful post wedding box filled with lovely touches. I would not hesitate in recommending her.”

“I have never seen anyone work harder than Amber on our wedding day. She arrived promptly with a big smile and managed to effortlessly remain unobtrusive whilst getting every shot we asked for and more besides. She has a wonderful manner – is friendly enough that you enjoy having her there but confident enough to ensure you don’t end the day without having posed for all the shots you wanted. She’s a dream and we’re so pleased we chose her.”

“Amber was a fantastic photographer. We love our pictures and she was incredibly unobtrusive and professional in the day. We spoke through what we wanted with Amber before the big day and she complies to our requests perfectly.”

“Amber is very talented. Our wedding photos were better than we could ever have imagined and she was so good at getting the best shots without even knowing she was there. Really really pleased with her work.”

“We couldn’t fault Liberty Pearl photography from the relaxed pre wedding shoot to the gorgeous presentation of the final pictures as well as making the photos on the big day a pleasurable and memorable experience. I was very nervous about all the photos, at 5 months pregnant I was worried I’d look awful in the pictures but Amber captured the real me not just pregnant me and got lovely pictures of hubby and I that I treasure. She also got great images of family and friends that really captured the essence of our happy day surrounded by the people we love.”

“I was absolutely over the moon with the photo’s from our wedding, amber did a fantastic job, got all the captions I wanted, and the out come was beautiful! 10 out of 10 to liberty Pearl.”

“Amber is the most amazing photographer. It took us a while to find someone who we clicked with. She provided an outstanding service, was really sound with her knowledge/advice and most importantly delivered on the day. We now have some of the most beautiful wedding pictures we have seen…we can’t believe it’s actually us! Our wedding album is stunning and something we have already got out to view frequently…it’s only been 8 months. The little added extras also meant so much to us. The box that our disc came in, the love heart she had engraved with our date and names and just the little touches which were so perfect. Amber is so hardworking and really deserves the recognition.”

“Amber really brought out all the details and the setting, despite an overcast day. She really captured all the intimacy of the day without ever being intrusive. I didn’t notice her at all throughout the ceremony, and yet she managed to capture the happiest moment of my life as if she was stood right next to me. And she didn’t ignore our guests – there are gorgeous photos of our nearest and dearest to treasure. Amber has a unique style, an excellent artistic eye and was an utter joy to work with.”

“Amber created some magical memories with her camera, both on our engagement shoot and our wedding day.  She wasn’t just our photographer, she was a caring, supportive, friendly addition to our special occasion, making us and our guests feel at ease and look incredible! She listened to our needs and created the perfect mix of formal and relaxed photos that captured our day in a way we never thought possible – when looking at our photos today you can almost hear the laughs, feel the warmth and taste the Pimms!!”

“Amber from day one of making contact was helpful and supportive. We wanted our photographer to capture the day but be invisible as we didn’t want many ‘posed’ pictures. I still now cannot stop looking at them, they bring the whole day alive again. The love really shines through. They are priceless.”

“Amber deserves to win. She is professional and friendly in all she does. She goes the extra mile to make your photos extra special. I’ve never liked a photo of me, but when we were presented with our wedding photos I was amazed…I didn’t dislike any!!. I can look back on our photos and smile for years to come. She made our day perfect. We hope she does so well in the future as she deserves recognition. Good Luck Amber …Even though you don’t need any. Highly recommended by us…Always Thankful to you.”

“We were so pleased with the service that Amber of Liberty Pearl Photography provided. We had seen her work via her website and loved the way she captured the essence of the subjects she photographed.  Being a much older bride and groom (both in our 60s), I was convinced that  I would never be the beautiful bride of all the photographs of other weddings and, in fact, initially had decided not to have photographs at all!!  I was wrong.  Amber just somehow ‘got’ the whole thing and her photographs shine with the happiness of the day. No, I wasn’t the youngest bride she had ever photographed, but that didn’t matter – she really brought out the best in us both.  The service she provides is spot on – from pre-wedding interview, getting to know us, what we like, how we felt about the day etc- right through to the little gift she sent out with the CD.  On the day, she was unobtrusive, just went about her craft in a quiet and confident way and managed to catch all the guests’ personalities to perfection.  And she is amazing with children.  I could go on and on – and I do, I’ve recommended Liberty Pearl to so many people now.  I really hope that this business achieves the award – it is richly deserved.”

“Amber is a wonderful photographer who patiently listen to our ideas and delivered images above and beyond what we expected. She is such a talented and wonderful person and photographer, I could not recommended her enough to anyone.”

“Amber was fantastic! She captured our day perfectly and the photos were exactly what we wanted. I love her style and she captured every little detail.”

“We were very pleased with how professional the photographer was on our special day &would highly recommend her to anyone wanting a photographer at their wedding.”

“Fantastic! Amber was amazing, and we were over the moon with the photos.”

“Good value, perfect photos and invisible at the wedding. What more can you ask for!”

“A great photographer.”
